FILM "CE NOM" by Ghassan Salhab

LAGO FILM FEST Lago/Venise // july 22 2024 // claire fontaine // multi-program screening

Each memory that is freed is the first step for all memories to gather Edouard Glissant
Filmmakers and artists from around the world have formed Some strings, an ensemble of unreleased filmic gestures that is rooted in Palestine, where poet and teacher Refaat Alareer was targeted by Israeli strikes along with seven members of his family. In his last poem, If I Must Die, published five weeks before his murder, Refaat Alareer calls those who should live to create a kite - a long-standing object of resistance- with bits of string and Some Strings, just like each of his readers, receives it as a legacy.
The kites here are a diversity of views that share a space against the silences, international indifference and continued approval of states, which are already fabricating memorial confusions about the greatest civilian massacre of the 21st century.
The systematic extermination of the Palestinian people on Palestinian soil is taking place before our very eyes, and international diplomacy is failing to prevent war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocidal actions.

“It's important to remember that genocide occurs whenever we deny the organic link of populations to genos, to what we have in common. When Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says that there are “human animals” opposite, he is pedagogically expressing genocidal intentions. When the President of Israel says that there is no difference between civilians and combatants and subjects the entire Palestinian population to collective punishment, when Israeli government ministers claim that the use of nuclear bombs against Gaza is plausible, (...), when we discover plans for the mass displacement of Palestinians.nes, when the Israeli Minister for Social Equality and Women's Empowerment declares that she is “proud of the ruins of Gaza” and that, in 80 years' time, all babies will be able to tell their grandchildren what the Jews did there, we are confronted not only with genocidal intentions, but with one of the most sordid and intolerable declarations of the cult of violence imaginable.” Vladimir Safatle, April, 2024 (São Paulo University)

Launched in March 2024, Some Strings has so far brought together over 100 artists, producing nearly 6 hours of short films, shown since June 25 and with no limit on dates, all over the world: cinemas and festivals as pre-programs or continuously. Some Strings can be adapted to all kinds of community spaces, protest camps and arts centers.

This initiative will continue to build and its diffusion will take place over the short, medium and long term.

RADIO FIREFLY FREQUENCIES Silvia Maglioni, Nikolay Oleynikov, Alessandra Pomarico, Graeme Thomson
Born in 2020, Firefly Frequencies is a radio platform that brings together artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, theorists and other collaborators from many different countries. For us radio is first and foremost a place of gathering where many voices can meet, mix, transform. A membrane, a communal body that perpetually reinvents itself through different modalities and temporalities, through the dimensions of creation and care and the shared powers of reception and receptivity.

The Hind Rajab Foundation is a branch of the March 30 Movement  mainly dedicated to the quest for justice in response to the crimes against humanity, war crimes and human rights violations perpetrated by the Israeli state against Palestinians. Our core mission is to actively pursue legal action against those responsible for these atrocities, including perpetrators, accomplices, and inciters of violence against Palestinians. Help us stay independent

Forensic Architecture : Cartography of Genocide platform and accompanying report develops a comprehensive mapping of military conduct in Gaza since 7 October 2023. The report, ‘A Spatial Analysis of the Israeli Military’s Conduct in Gaza since October 2023,’ is derived from Forensic Architecture’s ongoing research into the Israeli military’s conduct in Gaza and was provided to South Africa (SA) after being approached by SA to provide independent research and reporting for their ongoing submission in the case of Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel). For the provision of this report, Forensic Architecture received payment from South Africa.

Academic Solidarity With Palestine
Academic Solidarity With Palestine, organises online courses for students in Gaza. To date, over 350 courses have been offered with the help of more than 3,500 volunteer professors worldwide.

Publishers for Palestine
is a global collective of publishers, and others who work in publishing around the world, who stand for justice, freedom of expression, and the power of the written word.

Nobody can say they didn’t know,” says Palestinian writer, Susan Abulhawa

@AJIunit investigation exposes war crimes in Gaza through the medium of photos and videos posted online by Israeli soldiers themselves during the year-long conflict. Watch the full film here.

Life for Gaza

Each Cent Counts, Quenching the Thirst of Humanity in Gaza City

The Gaza Municipality is tasked with providing vital services such as water supply, waste management and sewage treatment. However, the widespread destruction in Gaza City has severely hampered the Municipality's ability to deliver even the most basic necessities to its residents. (For access in English, select the language from the العربية tab at the top left of the site screen)

A call for immediate action to rebuild Gaza
Architects for Gaza proposes the formation of Gaza Reconstruction Collective; interdisciplinary self-help clusters to help in reconstruction.

United screens for Palestine
United Screens for Palestine is an open and decentralised collective of programmers, cultural workers and venues. We are responding to the paralysis brought about by the ongoing genocide as well as the increasing policing, censorship and criminalisation of everything Palestinian. We aim to make each screening a space for conversation, learning and most of all, mobilisation. And we firmly believe that to present these films is to insist that witnessing is an active process, far beyond the act of watching. Ultimately, we build on long standing global film initiatives which serve as platforms for substantive discussions and an earnest exploration of the historical narrative of Palestine.

We'll keep on giving news about initiatives throughout the world.
